Every Monday - Friday, 6:30 - 8:30 A.M.
The mission of our partners at Sunrise Cafe, an independent non-profit run from the St. PJ's undercroft (fancy church word for basement), is to develop and nurture deep connections – connections among guests, between guests and volunteers, and between guests and the community.
Sunrise provides a safe space for New Haven’s food insecure and unhoused to rest, have conversations, and prepare for the day’s challenges with a full stomach. Sunrise’s free nutritious breakfast is served to all with warmth, friendship, compassion, kindness, dignity, support and respect. For many guests, the Cafe is also the entry point for housing, mental and physical health, and job placement services provided at the Cafe by partner organizations.
With a warm welcome and just two rules – no drugs on the premises and no arguments – Sunrise has become a community center for the homeless, a place to come every weekday morning and gather with friends.

A strong connection between St. PJ's and Sunrise Cafe
Sunrise Cafe started in 2015 as a project of Liberty Community Services, before becoming its own independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2019. Its co-founders included St. PJ's member Anne Calabresi, and it has been based at St. PJ's since it began. This holy partnership is one of the many ways St. PJ's seeks to love God and love our neighbors, and we are delighted for it to continue!
A note about parking for volunteers and visitors
The church parking lot is tiny and fills up fast, so most visitors find neighborhood street parking within a couple blocks. If you do park in the lot off Chapel Street, use only the church-owned spots against the building or along the southern fence by Sally's. Please do not park against the playground fence on your left (across the lot from the church); those are residential spots only.
